Where does the name “Plain Values” come from? The magazine was started 14 years ago within the Plain Community. Marlin himself was born Amish and still has many Amish family members. Though Marlin is no longer Amish, these “plain values” are rooted deeply within him and the brand he created.
While reading in Romans, Marlin had a “light bulb” moment where he realized that God is always revealing to us new things and connecting new dots. Sometimes it just takes us a little while to see the bigger picture that He is painting.

For 14 years now, we’ve been publishing plain values in print, and we just started the podcast about a year ago. Well, the brand, the name Plain Values goes all the way back to my roots. I was born Amish. I’ve got, I don’t know, 80 or 90 first cousins, half of whom are still, you know, still Amish. And so it just made sense to tie that directly into the plain community. That’s where plain values, you know, the branding came from. Just last night I was reading in Romans in chapter one. Let me read it to you for what can be known about God is plain to them, for he has shown it to them, because God has shown it to them. It has taken me 14 years to connect the dots between that verse and our little brand of plain values, reaching back to the plain community, the Amish, the whole deal. I sat there, the Bible on my lap, and I was just laughing because sometimes it really does take me a bit. I hope you enjoy plain values as much as we enjoy making it for you.
