Isn’t it unfair when we compare ourselves to someone else?

Marlin recalls a moment with friends out at breakfast when one guy said, “Man, that guy was made for that.”

Saddleback Leather is a leather company Marlin has admired and patronized for many years. Their founder, Dave Munson is a genius marketer and all-around cool guy.

Marlin shares how as much as he admires Dave, his marketing tactics, his leather products, and his mission in life, he knows he will never be Dave. No matter how much he wants to be like Dave, everyone around him will always still be stuck with Marlin instead.

But Marlin thinks, maybe that’s alright. Because not much would get done if we were all the exact same.

A couple friends and I were out having coffee and breakfast the other morning, and the comment was made, man, that guy was made for that. And it got me thinking about how unfair it is when we compare ourselves to someone else. this is a shameless plug for Saddleback Leather. I don’t. I’ve never met Dave and Suzette Munson, the founders of Saddleback. I will freely confess I love their product line. I love their leather. I have more than I would care to admit from, you know, briefcases to wallets and… let’s just say that I have a bunch of their products. Here’s the thing that I love the most about Dave and Suzette. Dave is one of the best marketing minds, and his team is one of the best, I think, in the in the industry. Their motto, their slogan for Saddleback Leather is they’ll fight over it when you’re dead. Okay, they have 100 year, no questions asked guarantee. It’s fantastic. I love branding, I love marketing, it’s really well done. And Dave is one of those guys that admits that they are a people company, cleverly disguised as a as a leather company. They love people. They are they are here to serve. They are believers. They they do tons of work in Africa. I feel like I’m pitching their products, which I guess I am in a way. But but here’s the point. Nobody is going to be more Dave Munson like than Dave. And as much as I admire his work and I admire his his genius in marketing and the stellar leather products that they make, I will never be like Dave Munson. Although I would like to be more like him. But everybody around me is stuck with me, for better or worse. And I guess my point is that’s okay, because not much would get done if we were all the exact same.
