Transcripts

Marlin had never shot a deer before. His friend took him hunting for another chance at his luck. They were talking, laughing, and rattling some antlers to try to lure the deer in.

They must have been doing more talking than hunting for they didn’t even notice when they had brought in a nice shooter buck. They only noticed when Marlin finally laughed a little too loud and the buck took notice of them. The buck spooked and ran away, and Marlin missed another chance at a nice buck.

Marlin reflects on this story and realizes he has no regrets about losing out on that deer. He decides he treasures the memory of sitting in a tree stand with his cousin, laughing and losing a buck, more than he would antlers on a wall. He chooses relationships over trophies.

My cousin and I are sitting in a tree stand we’re freezing our butts off together. We’re having a good time, and. And we were really talking more than we were hunting. Allen said that he would take me out hunting on my own land. You know, we had moved to this little piece of ground with a big patch of woods on the back end, and I have never shot a deer in my life. I’ve shot at deer with guns, but I’ve never actually killed a deer, and I wanted to do so. So we’re sitting there and we’re talking and we’re having a good time, and we start, you know, telling some stories. Allen starts to rattle a little bit and we talk some more, and he rattles, you know, a couple more times, and we talk and we laugh again, and all of a sudden we hear some twigs breaking, and we looked down to our, to, to my left and there stands a nice shooter Buck. I had been laughing just a little too loud and it spooked him. He came in without us hearing it because of our laughing and we missed it. And I completely missed the chance to to actually kill a nice buck on my own land. The point is this I will never regret… Maybe a little, But I’ll not regret it that much. I remember the time in the tree stand with my cousin, and I treasure it more than I would having a nice, you know, set of horns hanging on my wall. let’s keep relationships over stuff.
